Definition: selcall
selcall: Is an acronym for selective calling. Selcall is a means of automatically calling from one station to one, or more, remote stations whereby a specific call sequence is sent to signal them and to establish links between them.
Selective calling may be used to un-mute the speakers at the called station(s) or to initiate a handshake sequence for automatic link establishment.
Selective calling is specified in ITU-R Recommendations for both HF and VHF/UHF radio systems, generally for ship-to-shore, ship-to-ship and ground-to-aircraft communications.
Additionally there are many commercial and military selcall systems which utilise their own signalling protocols and formats. Our products utilise the commonly used Land Mobile Radio selcall system as used by Barrett and Codan, amongst others, and which is based loosely on the ITU - M 483 Recommendation.
